2024 MLB Free Agents: Latest Rumors, Predictions Before World Series Bracket | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors | Bleacher Report

Oct 22, 2024

Three of the biggest free agents in the upcoming offseason headline a collection of reports from an industry insider, including Juan Soto, Pete Alonso, and Willy Adames.

All three will score big deals, potentially switch teams, and possibly power their teams to the postseason.

What is the latest on each?

Find out with this collection of rumors and innuendos.

Juan Soto's 10th-inning blast catapulted the New York Yankees into the World Series and elevated what was already going to be a massive contract this offseason exponentially.

The New York Post's Jon Heyman confirmed for B/R that the magic number for Soto's contract is now $600 million.

If that is indeed the number, it would be the second-highest in MLB history behind only Shohei Ohtani's $700 million deal signed late last year.

Soto was one of the best players in the league, overshadowed only by his AL MVP candidate teammate Aaron Judge.

His 41 home runs, 166 hits, and 128 runs were the highest of his career, with none bigger than the aforementioned homer he launched out of Progressive Field Saturday.

The one-two punch of Soto and Judge provided the Yankees with an offensive onslaught they had not had in years past, when Judge was the sole offensive threat.

Heyman's report indicated that the Bronx Bombers and the across-town Mets are the two favorites to land the right fielder.

Mets owner Steve Cohen is one of the only owners in the league capable of outbidding the Yankees and, considering Starling Marte's injury history, would fit out in right. Whether that is a deal that gets done when the team in Queens is looking to re-sign their own elite slugger is the question.

The New York Mets' magical season came to a screeching halt Sunday night in Los Angeles with a loss to the Dodgers in the NLCS and now, all eyes turn to Pete Alonso and whether the team's front office can re-sign him.

Heyman believes there is a better-than 50 percent chance but that Cohen will have to get involved to make it happen as President of Baseball Operations David Stearns is unlikely to extend a big-money deal to players over 25.

It is understandable if the Mets are somewhat timid to offer Alonso a big contract as his stats have fallen off in recent seasons. Synonymous with home run-hitting, Alonso fall off significantly, bottoming out this season with 34, his fewest since the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

Still, Alonso secured his place in Mets lore with his home run off of Devin Williams in the NLCS Wildcard series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

He came through, proved he was a bigtime player who could win a series for the team, and earned the love and admiration of a Mets fan base that had grown weary of his ability to do so.

With the team expected to make a run at Soto, it would certainly be understandable if the organization opted to let Alonso test the market but he is the face of the team and someone beloved by the organization.

With all of the goodwill created by the team with its fans, letting Alonso leave feels like the wrong call and one Cohen will not be willing to make.

Willy Adames is one of the best shortstops in baseball and will be the top at his position when free agency kicks off after the World Series.

One of the teams playing in that series, the Los Angeles Dodgers, may very well land him, further bolstering one of the most star-studded rosters in all of sports, per Heyman.

The Dodgers have experimented with the shortstop position this season, with both Mookie Betts and Tommy Edman playing at that spot at different times.

A consistent answer at that position, like Adames, would add his bat to the lineup but also allow Betts to play in the outfield, where he is most effective.

Adames compiled 153 hits, 32 home runs, and his highest batting average in three seasons (.251). He was a driving force of a Brewers offense that helped carry it to the NL Wild Card, though the organization once again fell short of advancing to the divisional series.

The Brewers principal owner, Mark Attanasio, admitted after the team's loss to the Mets that the organization is aware of the big pocketbooks awaiting Adames in free agency and the reality that they may not be able to bring him back.

Should the Dodgers be able to put together a contract that convinces him to join a lineup that includes Betts, Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and Teoscar Hernández, they would almost immediately become the World Series favorite for the 2025 season and, on paper, one of the most impressive teams ever.
